WineDirect

WineDirect closes December 31. Make sure your data lands whole.

Commerce7 bought WineDirect's software business in January 2025 and is retiring WineDirect Classic at the end of 2026. Every winery still on it has to be somewhere else by then. Commerce7 will migrate your data at no charge, and the migration is well built. It is also a bulk process run by a vendor onboarding hundreds of wineries at once, and its own documentation is candid about what it leaves behind. Commerce7's migration guide

What the free migration doesn't do

Duplicate customers

The guide asks you to deduplicate customer records in WineDirect before the first push. Most wineries have years of duplicates from tasting-room sign-ups, and merging them by hand across thousands of records is the job nobody gets to.

Orders with errors

“Full order history comes over, excluding orders that have errors that need to be fixed.” Those orders are silently left behind unless someone finds and repairs them first.

Product details

Descriptions arrive with the formatting stripped. Type, varietal, vintage, country, region, and appellation are not imported. Only the main photo comes across. Bundle contents don’t.

Reporting that no longer matches

Commerce7 reports by paid date; WineDirect reported by submitted, completed, or fulfilled date. Last year’s numbers will look different in the new system and someone has to explain why.

Everything else

Custom fields, reviews, inventory totals, point-of-sale collections, and loyalty points are either manual, separate, or on request. And once WineDirect Classic is gone, so is the ability to go back and look.

All of the above is from Commerce7's own WineDirect migration guide, not a criticism of it. Source

What I do around the move

  1. Before: a complete export and an inventory. Every customer, order, club membership, product, gift card, and note that WineDirect holds, pulled into a readable archive you own. With counts. This is the copy you'll want in two years when someone asks about a 2019 club shipment.
  2. Before: clean-up. Duplicate customers merged, orders with errors repaired so they migrate instead of being skipped, SKUs and club names checked against the guide's rules. Done on the export first, then applied in WineDirect ahead of the first push.
  3. During: the details Commerce7 drops. Varietal, vintage, appellation, and region rebuilt as Commerce7 product data. Descriptions reformatted. Extra photos and bundle contents loaded. Custom fields mapped to wherever they belong now.
  4. After: reconciliation. Customer counts, active club members, order totals by year, gift-card balances, and points compared between the two systems, with the reporting-date difference explained in writing so your accountant isn't surprised.

Not going to Commerce7?

Some wineries are using the deadline to move to Vinoshipper, Shopify with a club app, or something else. The vendor on the other end will import what its tool imports. The archive, clean-up, and reconciliation above are the same job whatever the destination, and the archive matters more when the destination takes less.

For the agencies doing the migrations

If you're a Commerce7 partner handling website moves and you'd rather not own the data reconciliation, I do that part under your name. You keep the client relationship. I send you a clean export, a change log, and a comparison sheet you can forward.

Timing

Commerce7's onboarding takes six to eight weeks depending on data volume. Clean-up has to happen before the first data push to be useful. Counting back from December, a winery that hasn't started should start in September or October. Wineries that have already had the first push can still get the archive and the reconciliation.

Price

Fixed, in writing, after I've seen the export. The inventory in step one is how I get to a number instead of a range. Ask and I'll tell you what a winery your size has typically needed.

Send me your migration date

Or your rough customer and order counts. You'll get a reply within a working day with what to clean up before the first push, whether or not you hire me for the rest.
